Dr Bürger Medical Practice
This medical practice was completed in 2003 for the newly established practice of Dr Corinna Bürger in Krefeld-Hüls.
For me, this project remains the ultimate long-term test. For many years, well over one hundred patients passed through these rooms every day. That creates a level of wear and tear that never appears in the photographs taken on opening day.
Belgian granite was chosen for the reception area, while the treatment and waiting areas were finished with smoked oak end-grain parquet. Worktops and wash stations were made from Corian, and all fitted furniture was individually designed in smoked oak.
Works of art, poetic wall texts and high-quality furniture continue to define the atmosphere today. Instead of television screens or medical decoration, the design created spaces that convey calmness and warmth.
The reception forms the organisational heart of the practice. Bespoke joinery and clearly structured workflows have ensured efficient day-to-day operation for more than two decades.
Over more than twenty years, the practice has naturally evolved. New computer systems were introduced, and the lighting integrated into the reception desk was later converted to LED technology. The most spectacular incidents, however, involved the laboratory’s sliding glass door, which had to be replaced several times because patients repeatedly mistook it for a conventional hinged door.
Apart from that, the interior has aged remarkably well.
What began as a public general medical practice has since become a private practice specialising in general and aesthetic medicine. The interior required no fundamental alterations. It was able to accommodate new requirements without losing either its architectural quality or its functional clarity.
When I speak today about durability, material quality and sustainable interior architecture, I do so on the basis of experience rather than brochures or renderings. This project has allowed me to observe for more than twenty years how design decisions perform in everyday operation. The practice still looks almost exactly as it did on its opening day.
For me, that remains the most convincing form of quality control.
